Cupcake Ethics
My rats are first and foremost my pets
·
My rats are kept in single sex groups or in mixed sex groups where one or both of the rats have been neutered.
My rats are kept in a suitable environment. Pictures of my cages can be seen on the 'rat care' section of this website.
My rats have regular 'free range' time outside of the cage.
I will never let my rats socialise with any other animals that aren't rats.
Rats who show aggression towards humans or other rats or show signs of illness at any point in their life will not be bred from.
I will endeavour to keep in contact with owners of rats bred in my care in order to monitor their health, temperament and development throughout their life.
Breeding does will usually only have one litter in their lifetime. A possible second litter may occur if the mother is an excellent rat and mother and if this is the case a large break will be given between litters.
I will not breed from does before the age of 6 months old. I will be aiming to breed between the age of 8 - 12 months old however as my lines develop this may change.
I do not cull rats in my care. Information of all the rats born in my care is vital for future breeding plans. Any kittens who are born with defects will be humanely euthanased by my vets if we agree that the kitten does not have a quality of life.
I have support from other ethical rat breeders who also share the same exceptional ethics as myself.
I will provide help and advice to owners who have rats from me throughout the course of the rats life. If owners are unable to keep rats from me then they must come back to me.
All kittens homed from myself are on a pet only contract unless discussed prior to homing.
Kittens will not be homed before the age of 6 weeks. Kittens will generally leave me between the age of 6 - 8 weeks depending on whether I feel they are ready to leave for their new home.
Kittens will be homed in same sex pairs unless company is being sought for a similar aged kitten.
I do not support the pet shop trade, or 'backyard breeders' therefore my rats are either rescue rats or from breeders with excellent ethics. My first and foremost passion has always been rescue therefore I will continue to offer a home for life to rats if I am able to. My breeding programme is separate from my rescue work however they may be housed together.
My rats have access to veterinary care 24/7. I use Harleigh Vets in Bodmin, Cornwall. I have an excellent relationship with my vets and I trust them wholeheartedly.
My rats are given medical support until such a time where they have no quality of life.
